An Indian vegan-friendly vegetarian restaurant near Charing Cross

FSA food hygiene rating (2011-08-02): ★★★★★ (very good)

  • Separate vegan menu
  • Reasonable prices
  • Lots of seating
  • Sometimes busy

Sagar have a couple of Indian restaurants in London: this one, near Covent Garden, and another near Goodge Street. They’re very similar; the only thing to choose between them is which one is closer (and the one on Goodge Street is all on one floor, which is convenient if you’re not good with staircases).

The main menu doesn’t mark the vegan dishes, but they have a separate vegan menu you can ask for in the restaurant. Their website also has a nice online version for you to peruse.

Service is friendly without being overbearing, and as well as the usual array of curries and starters there’s also some more unusual dishes like dosas and uthappams (a kind of Indian pizza). On my visit we went for the idli dumplings (spongy in a good way) and onion bhajis as a starter (nicely crunchy; the coconut sambar is a nice accompaniment). We split a dosa and an uthappam between us, so we got a bit of each; they were generous, though I would have liked a little more variety.

Although this site is called ‘Nopudding’ I could probably have made an equally apposite pun on ‘Onepudding’: so many veggie places have a single vegan dessert option, and Sagar is no exception. And as usual, it’s sorbet. But this is an exceptionally good sorbet; it was described as raspberry, but it had some delicious rosewater notes in it too. I could have easily gone back for more.

If you’re looking for a sit-down Indian meal in the West End, Sagar is a great place to go.

About Nopudding London

Nopudding London was built entirely by Alex Pounds. It's designed as a more geography-centric guide of places to eat. Most veggie listings start with a table of text, but I'm normally trying to answer the question "Where can I get a good meal near _____?". Textual listings aren't very good at that.

I am available for hire, and you should follow me on Twitter.

Why only London?

I'm only adding places I've visited, as I'm more interested in making personal recommendations than being comprehensive. There are some other places elsewhere in the world, too, if you go looking for them...
