Jai Shri Krishna

An Indian vegetarian restaurant near Turnpike Lane

FSA food hygiene rating (2013-02-07): ★★☆☆☆ (improvement necessary)

  • Nice atmosphere
  • Great value
  • Lots of vegan options
  • Vegan options aren’t marked on the menu
  • Odd mix of counter service and table service

Jai Shri Krishna is an Indian restaurant in Turnpike Lane. Don’t be confused by the name: as far as I can tell, it’s not a Hare Krishna place. You’re going to get a good meal without being preached at.

The restaurant is nicely decorated and has a pleasant ambiance, though there are some aspects that throw that off. Going by the decor and lighting alone, you’d think you were in a great restaurant for a date. But the waiter only came over to hand us the laminated card menu & a pad of paper for us to write down our own order before wandering off. And this wasn’t a case of an over-rushed waiter on a particularly busy night: we were the only people in the restaurant. You will be ordering at the counter.

Vegan options aren’t explicitly marked on the menu, but the gentleman behind the counter was pretty knowledgeable and assured me that most of the dishes on the menu are vegan-friendly as they don’t use butter ghee. Avoid things with yoghurt or paneer and you’re fine.

Our onion bhajis were tasty, and generously portioned, tending more towards the chickpea-flour fritter end of the bhaji spectrum. We ordered a rice and a main dish each, both of which were tasty and very generously portioned. There was way too much for us to eat; we ended up leaving with at least one more meal’s worth of leftovers. The poppadoms were obviously made fresh, which is awesome, but were also quite oily, which is not so awesome.

Best of all, our two main dishes, two starters, and non-alcoholic drinks came to something around £20-30 including tip. Bargain. If you’re in the area and need a bite, this is the place to visit.

About Nopudding London

Nopudding London was built entirely by Alex Pounds. It's designed as a more geography-centric guide of places to eat. Most veggie listings start with a table of text, but I'm normally trying to answer the question "Where can I get a good meal near _____?". Textual listings aren't very good at that.

I am available for hire, and you should follow me on Twitter.

Why only London?

I'm only adding places I've visited, as I'm more interested in making personal recommendations than being comprehensive. There are some other places elsewhere in the world, too, if you go looking for them...
